How Do I Castrate a Pig?  New Production Videos Posted!

As a farmer, when it comes to learning new skills like piglet ear notching, chicken processing, or cheese making, it helps a lot to have a visual. That’s why the Northeast Beginning Farmer Project has just posted a new set of farm production videos at https://nebeginningfarmers.org/video/howto/

If livestock is your passion,  you can learn how the Glos family at Kingbird Farm raises broiler chickens, laying hens, pork, and beef on their organic farm in Berkshire, NY.  If raising sheep is on the horizon, MaryRose Livingston at Northland Sheep Dairy demonstrates how she and her husband Donn Hewes manage their 100% grass-fed flock year-round to produce lambs for meat, wool, and sheep cheese.  Two vegetable farms – Sweetland Farm CSA and Muddy Fingers Farm – round out the farms featured in the video library.  Sweetland Farm CSA entered a market that was thought to be saturated with CSA’s already, and several years later they have nearly 400 subscribers.  Muddy Fingers Farm is a great model for a 2-person farm with little or no outside labor. They sell at farmers’ market and through a small CSA.  Check out our latest videos today!

July 21, 2011. Diversifying the Family Farm. 1:00pm-3:00pm. Engelbert Farms, Nichols, NY. Join NOFA-NY, PASA, and Kevin and Lisa Engelbert for a look at the first certified organic dairy farm in our country.  When the Engelberts’ sons decided to return to the farm after college, Kevin and Lisa didn’t rapidly expand their dairy herd to support two additional families.  Instead, they decided to diversify their operation and today the farm produces certified organic beef, pork, cheese, grains, and vegetables which the Engelberts market through their farm store, farmers markets, and several local retail outlets.  They will discuss how they got started in organic farming, the steps they took to diversify their farm, and how they manage such a diverse operation today.  Cost is $10 – supported in part by the USDA Risk Management Agency.  For more information contact Katie at NOFA-NY at .

July 22-24, 2011. 7th Annual Northeast Permaculture Convergence. Camp Epworth, High Falls, NY.

Permaculture has much to offer in these challenging times. For active or practicing permaculturists in the region (teachers, designers, organizers, etc.), the full Friday-Sunday convergence offers a unique chance to gather, socialize, and work strategically together.  Special sessions and dedicated areas, such as the Designers’ Lounge and a Regional Panel, will facilitate connection and collaboration. The full weekend is designed for people who have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate course or self-identify as a permaculturist, but anyone who would like to learn about this approach and set of skills and strategies is strongly encouraged to join the one-day Permaculture Festival on Saturday July 23rd from 10:00am until bedtime. August 11, 2011. FFA Tractor Driving Safety Contest. Seneca Falls, NY. FFA students will show off their tractor driving skills as part of the Northeast’s largest agricultural trade show . August 13, 2011. New York Nut Growers Association Summer Meeting. 8:45am-3:00pm, Trumansburg, NY. At these field meetings, you will learn to correctly identify the most important fly pests affecting cattle on pasture in the Northeast. You will also learn techniques to determine if fly populations are at numbers that can cause economic injury. Learn the options available for controlling fly pests affecting animals on pasture including the role of dung beetles, use of effective biting fly catching traps suitable for use on pasture, and what you should know about making insecticide use decisions. August 24, 2011. Northeast Buckwheat Field Day. 1:00pm-3:30pm, USDA-NRCS Plant Materials Center, 3266-A State Route 352, Corning, NY. FREE. Buckwheat can be a valuable rotation crop on small farms, and is also well suited to new farms and to part-time farming. The production costs are relatively low, and the management attention it requires comes in a few short, but intense, bursts.  The price paid to growers has tripled in the last few years, which has brought it much more attention. In this presentation, Thomas Björkman of Cornell will review buckwheat grain production methods, both for new and advanced buckwheat producers. Field demonstrations will show how planting methods and plant populations affect weed suppression, branching, flower production, lodging resistance, and yield potential. The discussion will also review how this growing season will affect harvest timing, and how to assess it on your farm. The field day is a chance to meet fellow buckwheat growers and learn from them. Grants Manager, NY Farm Viability Institute, Syracuse, NY

New York Farm Viability Institute seeks a Grants Manager to coordinate activities of the group’s collaborating institutions, such as Cooperative Extension Associations and Cornell University. The successful candidate will work with NYFVI Managing Director Dave Grusenmeyer to make sure that institute-funded projects are conducted properly with an eye toward generating measurable farm level impacts. Professional Development Grant,  Northeast SARE – Preproposal Due August 1

Northeast SARE Professional Development grants build the knowledge base and educational infrastructure so that Cooperative Extension educators and other agricultural professionals can get and use the knowledge they need to help farmers move toward greater sustainability.  These grants are for organizations to develop and deliver training, specifically agricultural training with sustainable content. In any given year, SARE awards about $500,000 in Professional Development Grants, with awards ranging from $60,000 to $200,000.  These grants are not for individuals who hope to attend training and need money for tuition or travel.  A preproposal is a brief concept document that reviewers use to select proposals with robust outcomes and plans of work. Leopold Center’s 2011 Request for Pre-proposals – Due August 15th

The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture is looking for innovative ideas that will help fulfill its mission to identify and reduce negative environmental and socio-economic impacts of agricultural practices and contribute to the development of profitable farming systems that conserve natural resources. The Center will accept pre-proposals from investigators representing any Iowa nonprofit organization/agency and/or educational institution, including soil and water conservation districts, schools and colleges, and regional development groups. Small, Socially Disadvantaged Producer Grant Program – Due August 15th

USDA Rural Development Cooperative Programs requests proposals from eligible cooperatives for almost $3.5 million in competitively awarded grants to fund technical assistance to small, socially-disadvantaged agricultural producers in rural areas. Application materials may be obtained at the Rural Development website or by contacting the USDA Rural Development State Office. For additional information, see the June 29, 2011, Federal Register.

Value-Added Producer Grant – Due August 29th

USDA is accepting applications for grants to provide economic assistance to independent producers, farmer and rancher cooperatives and agricultural producer groups through the Value-Added Producer Grant Program. Value-Added Producer Grants may be used for feasibility studies or business plans, working capital for marketing value-added agricultural products and for farm-based renewable energy projects. Eligible applicants include independent producers, farmer and rancher cooperatives, and agricultural producer groups. The maximum grant amount for a planning grant is $100,000 and the maximum grant amount for a working capital grant is $300,000. Approximately $37 million in competitive grant funds is available for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011. Hay Production Resources for New York State and Similar Climates

The demand for hay over the past few years has been very good. Both veteran and new farmers are growing this crop as the demand continues and the number of livestock operations keeps growing. However, when you try to find a manual on the many aspects of producing hay, it just does not seem to exist. Veteran farmers need to fine-tune their knowledge, and new farmers have all the questions of a beginner. As a response, “Hay Production Resources” was put together to add to the knowledge of veteran farmers and provide a knowledge base for new farmers. The hay market is growing, but not just for any old hay. The horse, dairy goat, sheep, llama, alpaca, and other livestock operations want and need high-quality forage suited to their specific needs. Producing excellent hay for the specific needs of each type of customer requires a basic knowledge of agronomy, hay production, and livestock nutrition. The bar is being raised in this expanding hay market and “Hay Production Resources” is a start in providing information for those that want to meet the challenge. It is a collection of articles, spreadsheets, and other resources. Most of them were gathered on the internet from University sources. Many are from outside of New York, but are applicable to the New York climate and agriculture industry. Areas with temperate climates like New York may find this information useful. However, all this information should be used with discretion since there are many regional differences and the agriculture industry is changing at an ever accelerating rate.
